Eating well, simply

Eating · 3 minute read

Good eating is mostly a handful of plain habits repeated, rather than rules about single foods.

Half the plate

Fill about half of each plate with vegetables and fruit, a quarter with whole grains such as brown rice, oats or wholemeal bread, and a quarter with protein: beans, fish, eggs, tofu or lean meat.

Water first

Make water the everyday drink. Sugary drinks add a lot of sugar without filling you up, and fruit juice is best kept to a small glass.

Easy swaps

Nuts or fruit instead of biscuits. Wholegrain instead of white. Less salt at the table, and a look at the label on ready meals and sauces, where most salt hides.

Eat slowly

It takes a while to feel full. Sitting down to eat, away from screens, and putting the fork down between bites makes it easier to stop when you have had enough.

Particular diets for medical conditions are best planned with a doctor or a dietitian.
